Zinc Bar82 West 3rd Street, New York 10012
Willerm Delisfort and Jason Marshall are billed at Zinc Bar on New Year’s Eve. The listing presents Delisfort as a pianist, composer and educator, and Marshall as a baritone saxophonist, but does not confirm whether they will perform as a duo or with a larger group. It does, however, schedule two performances across the evening, making this a chance to hear two New York-based musicians whose work connects jazz to a broad range of Black American musical traditions.
Delisfort was born in Little Haiti, Miami, and is now based in New York. His work draws on jazz, gospel and R&B, and he founded the Willerm Delisfort Project while studying at Florida A&M University. After further study in the Chicago area, he worked with Von and George Freeman, Ernest Dawkins, Fareed Haque, Marquis Hill, Makaya McCraven, Maurice Brown and Junius Paul. Marshall has been based in New York since 2003 and is described as rooted in bebop while remaining musically expansive. A performer, composer, arranger and educator, he has played and recorded with artists including Roy Hargrove, Aretha Franklin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chaka Khan, Abdullah Ibrahim, Hermeto Pascoal, Kurt Elling, The Roots, Mingus Big Band and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Zinc Bar offers a richly textured experience where the past and present of jazz converge in a single, dimly lit room adorned with Art Deco details like velvet upholstery, polished brass, and a Parisian zinc bar. The venue’s layout centers around a close-up stage and a vintage bar, creating a setting where the music is both the focus and a shared journey. Patrons can expect expertly crafted cocktails alongside performances that range from world-class jazz to vibrant Brazilian and African rhythms, often featuring multiple sets and occasional late-night jams. The seating is lounge-style, encouraging attentive listening rather than casual chatter, making it a place to immerse fully in the sound. This is a space where history lingers, once hosting legends like Billie Holiday and Thelonious Monk, now continuing their legacy with a sophisticated yet welcoming vibe.
