Jeff Rupert Quartet
The Django2 6th Avenue, New York 10013
Jeff Rupert brings his quartet to The Django for a two-set evening led by the saxophonist. Pianist Richard Drexler, bassist Eric Wheeler, and drummer McClenty Hunter complete the band, giving Rupert a piano-bass-drums rhythm section for the night. The program is billed simply as the Jeff Rupert Quartet, with no guest artist, tribute, or release attached.
Rupert is an acclaimed saxophonist who has appeared on more than 75 albums, including 11 as a leader. His recorded collaborations include Mel Tormé, Kevin Mahogany, Ernestine Anderson, Maynard Ferguson, Sam Rivers, Kenny Barron, Veronica Swift, George Garzone, Diane Schuur, and Benny Carter, whose Harlem Renaissance won a Grammy. His 2020 album The Ripple was named the year’s No. 5 jazz album, while It Gets Better, made with Barron, Joe Farnsworth, and Peter Washington, reached the top ten on three national jazz charts. Beyond performance, Rupert is UCF’s Distinguished Professor, Trustee Endowed Chair, and Director of Jazz Studies, founded Flying Horse Records, and hosts the nationally syndicated radio program Jazz and the American Spirit.
The Django offers a subterranean jazz experience inspired by Parisian boîtes, with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick walls that frame a stage equipped with a state-of-the-art Meyer Sound system. The venue combines two cocktail bars and an open dining area where you can enjoy an elevated menu alongside live performances every night. The evening unfolds with a focus on attentive listening, enhanced by award-winning cocktails crafted by Natasha David and a selection of small plates and dinner options. Shows require a cover charge and reservations are recommended to secure your spot. The setting invites you to settle in for a night of rich jazz sounds, fine food, and carefully mixed drinks, all within the cellar level of the Roxy Hotel, creating a distinct mood that feels both exclusive and welcoming.
