Breaks: A Solo Performance by Jessica Cook (Night 2)

Roulette509 Atlantic Ave, New York 11217

Jessica Cook brings Breaks to Roulette for its second night as a solo performance. Cook performs and choreographs this physical exploration of nonsense-making, built from fragmentation, compressed sound and movement scores. The work uses improvisation scores, constructed sound costumes and artist-made “toys” to shape its material. Additional performers are listed as TBA.

Born in Kingston, New York, Cook is a Brooklyn-based choreographer and performer who has worked in the borough for more than two decades. Her solo practice brings together movement, the physicality of making sound and sculpture, creating what Roulette calls “absurdist and strained worlds.” Her work has been presented at La MaMa Moves Festival, LMCC’s River to River Festival, Pageant, Roulette and Movement Research at Judson Memorial Church. Her current collaborators include Tess Dworman, Benjamin Akio Kimmitch, visual artist Amy Beecher, Sam Kim and director and dreamworker Amanda Lovejoy Street.

Roulette occupies a beautifully restored 1928 Art Deco theater in Downtown Brooklyn, offering a spacious concert hall with a dramatic proscenium and a balcony that seats up to 400. The venue is known for its exceptional acoustics and sightlines, making every note clear from front to back. Shows here focus on adventurous and experimental music, often featuring world premieres and collaborations across disciplines. The audience is typically attentive, drawn by the venue's commitment to innovative performances rather than casual socializing. A full bar is available, and seating is flexible, with cushioned chairs arranged to suit each event. The venue’s professional sound and lighting systems enhance the experience, and performances are ticketed, with advance purchase recommended. Expect an evening of thoughtful, boundary-pushing art in a setting that respects both the performers and the audience.
