Lotus
Supporting Talent: Michael Wilbur
Lotus brings its four-piece live show to Pappy & Harriet’s indoor stage, with Michael Wilbur of Moon Hooch also on the bill. The group’s set joins electronic dance music to the improvisational approach of a jam band, moving between composed material and open-ended collective playing. Expect guitar solos, modular-synth passages and rhythmic momentum shaped for the dance floor, rather than a strictly fixed run-through of songs.
Active on the road for more than two decades, Lotus has grown from club dates to appearances at venues including Red Rocks, where it has played 15 times, and festivals including Bonnaroo, Outside Lands and Electric Forest. The band is also known for Summerdance, its annual festival in Garrettsville, Ohio. Its 11th studio album, How To Dream In Color, is primarily instrumental but incorporates traditional and electronically treated vocals, along with guest vocals, horns, violin, handpan and modular synths. Its music draws on psychedelic rock, krautrock, post-rock, disco and funk; the listing highlights the driving krautrock instrumental “In the Shadow of the Mountain” and the groove of “Watching the Distant Storm.”
Pappy & Harriet’s began as the cantina on a 1940s Western film set, and that history still frames a night here: the venue sits among Pioneertown’s old movie-set facades, with the desert just beyond. It is a restaurant and live-music venue, with shows in indoor and outdoor spaces; the setting and touring acts make the trip feel tied to this particular outpost, rather than just a concert stop. Shows are ticketed, general admission and standing-room only, with ADA seating available at either stage. The restaurant is separate, serves food, and runs a first-come, first-served waitlist, so put your name down early if you want dinner; eating does not secure a show ticket. Check the event details for doors and weather, especially for an outdoor performance.
