Who’s Live Today?

Malibu

Malibu, Two Abyss

Lodge Room104 Avenue 56, Los Angeles 90042

Malibu heads to Lodge Room for a live set with Two Abyss featured on the bill. The French composer and vocalist builds her performances as a seamless blend of tracks, using lighting cues and shifts in sound dynamics to shape the set. Her music brings together drones, neoclassical elements, dance and pop: muted piano, woodwinds, dense strings and pads frame vocals that move between whispers, spoken passages, long breaths and gasps. It is music concerned with meditation, cities, seas and the self, delivered through a carefully composed live format.

From France, Malibu has performed at Atonal and C2C and opened for frequent collaborator Oklou on the Choke Enough tour. She also hosts the acclaimed NTS show United in Flames, inviting guests including Evian Christ, Casey MQ and Stella Explorer into a program that pairs conversation with curation. Her work extends to film: she scored the 2024 film La Fille Qui Explose (The Exploding Girl), which screened at Cannes. The venue’s portrait of her calls her “a musician by trade but an allegorist in practice,” with compositions that hold loose threads of several forms inside a personal sonic language.

The Lodge Room offers a distinctive live music experience on the second floor of a building in Highland Park, where the room’s modest size brings the stage close to the audience, creating a direct connection with the performers. The venue features a bar but does not serve full meals, encouraging guests to focus on the music while enjoying drinks. Shows typically start in the evening, with doors opening around 7 pm and performances beginning an hour later, often including multiple sets or late-night shows. Seating is limited and generally first come first served, so arriving early can secure a good spot. The space’s walls and layout emphasize the music, making it a place to listen attentively while still allowing for a relaxed social vibe. This venue remains a lively part of the local music scene, hosting a range of artists and styles.
