Piano Spheres: Thomas Kotcheff
Thomas Kotcheff
2220 Arts + Archives2220 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles 90057
Pianist and composer Thomas Kotcheff performs multitracked piano arrangements of Anna Meredith’s Bumps Per Minute (18 Studies for Dodgems) and FIBS, recasting Meredith’s propulsive electronic sound world for a single pianist. The program also includes the world premiere of Christopher Rountree’s Piano and Tape.
Kotcheff’s work has been described as interpreting existing music without strict fidelity to the written note. His earlier Piano Spheres program, Between Systems, brought together works from popular and electronic music with Morton Feldman’s chromatic pointillism.
The 2220 Arts + Archives lounge and theater is a volunteer-run cultural center in a converted theater space, hosting experimental music, film, and literature. The room is a modest, intimate space with a stage and seating for a small audience, where the front row is close enough to feel the energy of the performers. The bar is open for 21+ events, offering drinks to accompany the music and conversation. Shows typically begin with doors opening 30-45 minutes early, and the venue operates as a programming cooperative, curating events that reflect its mission of non-commercial, adventurous arts.
