Meredith Monk brings the West Coast premiere of Indra’s Net, a full production inspired by the Buddhist and Hindu parable of an interconnected universe. Monk directs and performs with members of her Vocal Ensemble and Wild Up, with John Hollenbeck on percussion and Christopher Rountree as music director. Music, movement, video, sound, lighting, and scenic and costume design combine in a work that moves through celestial, earthly, and human realms without an intermission.

Composer and singer Meredith Monk is a pioneering figure in extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, having spent her career exploring the possibilities of the human voice. Her Vocal Ensemble joins Los Angeles-based new-music band Wild Up for what Wild Up calls “a vast meditation on interdependence.”

Designed by Frank Gehry, this concert hall is a striking architectural landmark with sweeping stainless steel curves that catch the light outside, while inside, its acoustics are meticulously crafted to deliver rich, clear sound to every seat. The auditorium seats over two thousand people in a space where the audience is fully immersed in the music, surrounded by warm wood paneling and a stage that brings performers close to listeners. The venue hosts ticketed performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other ensembles, offering an evening focused on attentive listening rather than casual socializing. Nearby bars and restaurants in Downtown Los Angeles provide options for pre- or post-show dining, but inside, the experience centers on the music in a refined, elegant setting.
