Southern Culture on the Skids

Pappy & Harriet's

Southern Culture on the Skids comes to Pappy & Harriet’s as the Chapel Hill trio of Rick Miller on guitar and vocals, Mary Huff on bass and vocals, and Dave Hartman on drums. The bill offers no further show-specific framing, but the group’s repertoire draws on rockabilly, surf, country, R&B and garage rock, with a punk edge and a taste for humor.

Recording and touring since 1983, Southern Culture on the Skids are known for Southern-themed songs, “wacky antics,” and a live show Rolling Stone called “a hell raising rock and roll party.” Their tour biography credits them with sharing stages with Link Wray, Loretta Lynn, Hasil Adkins and Patti Smith. Americana Highways calls them a “rockabilly-fusion band,” hearing country stompers, funk, soul and psychedelia in the mix, while Slant says their musicianship can carry songs such as “Banana Puddin’” beyond their “campiness.”

Pappy & Harriet’s began as the cantina on a 1940s Western film set, and that history still frames a night here: the venue sits among Pioneertown’s old movie-set facades, with the desert just beyond. It is a restaurant and live-music venue, with shows in indoor and outdoor spaces; the setting and touring acts make the trip feel tied to this particular outpost, rather than just a concert stop. Shows are ticketed, general admission and standing-room only, with ADA seating available at either stage. The restaurant is separate, serves food, and runs a first-come, first-served waitlist, so put your name down early if you want dinner; eating does not secure a show ticket. Check the event details for doors and weather, especially for an outdoor performance.
