Chris Dave, Eric Gales, MonoNeon and Cory Henry meet at Blue Note Los Angeles as a four-player, one-off collaboration. The billed quartet brings Dave on drums, Gales on guitar, MonoNeon on bass and Henry on keyboards for a set built around their shared improvising: a fusion of funk, blues, rock, jazz and experimental sound. The appeal is the particular combination of players, with the night framed as an open-ended exchange between four musicians known for individual voices rather than a regular band repertoire.
This is a one-off grouping rather than a separately documented band, so there is no group home base or established biography. MonoNeon is an American bassist and experimental musician from Memphis, Tennessee, known for bass videos on YouTube, for being one of the last people to work with Prince, and for a Grammy-winning contribution to Nas’s King’s Disease. He has collaborated with Henry on Operation Funk and with Gales on A Tribute to LJK; Dave and MonoNeon have also performed together in other lineups. A review of a different Dave, MonoNeon and Marcus King trio called their chemistry “ridiculous” and praised MonoNeon’s “massive foundation.”
A small, dimly lit basement club tucked into a Hollywood corner, Blue Note Los Angeles is a dedicated jazz and live music space with a long-standing reputation for intimate, high-quality performances. The room is modest, with a few rows of seats facing a stage where the music is the focus. It's a place to listen, not to socialize, with the audience often quiet, absorbed in the musicians. Drinks are available, but the atmosphere is centered on the music. Shows are ticketed, with multiple sets each night, and the evening unfolds with a steady rhythm of live music, not casual conversation.
