Pretty Sick
Pretty Sick, Sex Week
El Rey Theatre5515 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles 90036
Pretty Sick heads to El Rey Theatre in Miracle Mile for a Los Angeles date with Sex Week also on the bill. Pretty Sick is Sabrina Fuentes’s New York act, described both as a band and as Fuentes’s project, with a changing lineup around her. The available information does not identify the musicians who will join Fuentes for this performance, but it places her at the core of the night as the act’s vocalist, songwriter and, in differing accounts, bassist or guitarist.
Pretty Sick grew from New York DIY roots into a project recognized for raw, personal coming-of-age writing. Its 2022 album Makes Me Sick Makes Me Smile was described by its label as “blunt, bleak and stubbornly romantic,” while the later Streetwise EP moved toward “a more experimental, electronic sound,” according to Paste. DAZED called the music “brash, youthful and scuffed round the edges,” and Pitchfork named Fuentes “a singular and compelling lyricist.” Dirty Hit has released the project’s records, and producer Paul Q. Kolderie, known for work with Pixies, Hole, Radiohead and Dinosaur Jr., has collaborated with Pretty Sick. Clash heard the debut as “a grungy tour-de-force in honest lyricism and paralysing instrumentals.”
El Rey’s distinction is written into its room: a 1936 Art Deco movie palace, still dressed with chandeliers and velvet, now used for live concerts. The theatre became a music venue in 1994, so a night here pairs a preserved historic interior with a working concert hall. Expect general-admission standing on the main floor unless your show’s ticket details say otherwise; some performances offer VIP table seating in the balcony. Doors typically open an hour before showtime, and support acts may be added closer to the date, so check the event listing before heading over. The venue has cashless concessions, and its FAQ points guests to a neighboring restaurant for a bite. It remains an active venue on Wilshire Boulevard in Miracle Mile.
