Watsky x Infinity
Alex Theatre216 N Brand Blvd, Los Angeles 91203
George Watsky brings the x Infinity Anniversary Screening Tour to the Alex Theatre as a full-band show with his longtime band. He will perform x Infinity in its entirety, synchronized to a projection of the album’s film. This Los Angeles stop frames the record as both a concert and a screening, with the songs played live against the accompanying visual work.
The San Francisco-bred Watsky is a rapper, poet and multidisciplinary artist whose work moves through hip-hop, spoken word, storytelling and rapid-fire lyricism. His official description calls him a genre-bending rapper and poet known for “verbal gymnastics”; Billboard has described his path as that of a slam poet turned rapper. x Infinity was executive-produced by Russell Simmons, with production from longtime collaborator Anderson .Paak and contributions from Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun; the album also features Julia Nunes and Daveed Diggs. AllMusic called it “broad and colorful” in stylistic range and “his brightest, most accomplished release yet,” while The Musical Hype praised Watsky’s “magnificent, poetic talents.”
The Alex Theatre’s unusual claim to fame is its atmospheric auditorium: Greek and Egyptian-inspired details create the illusion of an open-air garden, beneath the theatre’s distinctive 100-foot neon tower. Opened in 1925 as a vaudeville and movie house, it now presents concerts and a broad program of performing arts at 216 North Brand Boulevard in downtown Glendale. Expect a formal theatre evening in a large, roughly 1,300-seat auditorium, with reserved seats and a stage framed by ornate decoration. Shows are ticketed, so check the event listing for seats and details before you go. Concessions are available, and Brand Boulevard’s restaurants and cafes make it easy to plan dinner nearby. The Alex is still operating and listing upcoming performances.
