Piano Spheres: Vicki Ray

Vicki Ray

2220 Arts + Archives2220 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles 90057

Vicki Ray gives a solo piano recital shaped around the color blue, drawing inspiration from books by Maggie Nelson and William Gass. The program includes Paul Dresher’s “Blue Diamonds,” Pierre Jodlowski’s “Série Bleue,” and world premieres by Alex Wand and Hunter Ochs, with Severin Behnen.

A Los Angeles-based pianist, improviser and composer, Ray is known for contemporary piano repertoire and thoughtful, innovative programming. Her work ranges from Boulez and Reich to Wadada Leo Smith and Beethoven; the Los Angeles Times has praised her “musical thoroughness and technical panache that puts a composer’s thoughts directly before the listener.”

The 2220 Arts + Archives lounge and theater is a volunteer-run cultural center in a converted theater space, hosting experimental music, film, and literature. The room is a modest, intimate space with a stage and seating for a small audience, where the front row is close enough to feel the energy of the performers. The bar is open for 21+ events, offering drinks to accompany the music and conversation. Shows typically begin with doors opening 30-45 minutes early, and the venue operates as a programming cooperative, curating events that reflect its mission of non-commercial, adventurous arts.
