Gil Shaham and Akira Eguchi bring their longstanding violin and piano partnership to Walt Disney Concert Hall for a Colburn Celebrity Recital devoted to Beethoven. Their program pairs Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas Nos. 6, 7 and 8, moving from the warmth of No. 6 through the drama of No. 7 to the virtuosity of No. 8. Shaham is the violinist and Eguchi his longtime recital partner at the piano, in a focused duo set built around three contrasting works.
Shaham was born in Champaign, Urbana, Illinois, and Eguchi in Tokyo. Shaham has appeared with the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic; Eguchi’s work has included solo, chamber, harpsichord and collaborative-piano performances, as well as collaborations with Kyoko Takezawa and Julian Rachlin. Their partnership can also be heard on Shaham’s The Fauré Album, which includes the Fauré Violin Sonata. The New York Times called Eguchi “a pianist of fluency and rectitude,” while Bachtrack heard Shaham’s Beethoven as “dexterous but never too flashy,” with a “penetratingly rich tone.” A review of the pair praised their “fine balance between instruments” and “partnership of equals.”
Designed by Frank Gehry, this concert hall is a striking architectural landmark with sweeping stainless steel curves that catch the light outside, while inside, its acoustics are meticulously crafted to deliver rich, clear sound to every seat. The auditorium seats over two thousand people in a space where the audience is fully immersed in the music, surrounded by warm wood paneling and a stage that brings performers close to listeners. The venue hosts ticketed performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and other ensembles, offering an evening focused on attentive listening rather than casual socializing. Nearby bars and restaurants in Downtown Los Angeles provide options for pre- or post-show dining, but inside, the experience centers on the music in a refined, elegant setting.
