Los Angeles Youth Orchestra Fall Concert
Alex Theatre216 N Brand Blvd, Los Angeles 91203
Los Angeles Youth Orchestra brings its Fall Concert, Fireworks, Monsters, and Cannons, to the Alex Theatre. More than 130 students from across the Los Angeles area will perform in the orchestra’s two ensembles, the Symphony Orchestra and the Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra. The program pairs Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain with Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks Overture and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, a three-part bill built around ominous scenes, ceremonial fanfares and the work whose climax gives the concert its cannon reference.
LAYO is a greater Los Angeles youth orchestra of more than 100 student musicians drawn from over 50 schools. Its players form a full orchestral roster, and the organization has sought advanced musicians on violin, viola, double bass, English horn, bass clarinet, French horn and tuba. In spring 2026, the orchestra was led by artistic director and conductor Russell Steinberg, with assistant conductor Jorge Padron. The ensemble has appeared at the Alex Theatre before, including a 25th-anniversary finale that brought alumni into the performance. No independent reviewers’ comments or collaborators for this concert are identified in the available information.
The Alex Theatre’s unusual claim to fame is its atmospheric auditorium: Greek and Egyptian-inspired details create the illusion of an open-air garden, beneath the theatre’s distinctive 100-foot neon tower. Opened in 1925 as a vaudeville and movie house, it now presents concerts and a broad program of performing arts at 216 North Brand Boulevard in downtown Glendale. Expect a formal theatre evening in a large, roughly 1,300-seat auditorium, with reserved seats and a stage framed by ornate decoration. Shows are ticketed, so check the event listing for seats and details before you go. Concessions are available, and Brand Boulevard’s restaurants and cafes make it easy to plan dinner nearby. The Alex is still operating and listing upcoming performances.
