Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band play a New Year’s Eve celebration, bringing the fiery rhythms and soulful grooves highlighted for the band’s December 30 and 31 run.
The Grammy-winning bandleader, conguero and percussionist was born in Laredo, Texas and grew up in a Los Angeles suburb. Sanchez formed his own group in 1980 after playing with Cal Tjader’s band from 1975 until Tjader’s death in 1982. His music draws together straightahead jazz, gritty soul, and Latin American and South American melodies and rhythms, carrying forward traditions associated with Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente and Tjader.
