World Stage Big Band
The World Stage4317 - 4331 Degnan Boulevard, Los Angeles 90008
World Stage Big Band takes up the Sunday program at The World Stage in Leimert Park. Coordinated by Billy McCoy, the session is presented as a workshop tracing the decades of jazz development across the past century. Rather than a one-off concert billing with a named roster, it is a working large-ensemble rehearsal band: the focus is on playing through the music and its changing language together. The venue’s program also identifies Ralph Gibson as the host for the Sunday series.
The World Stage describes the band as a rehearsal ensemble exploring “the wide and wonderful world of jazz as performed by a large ensemble.” Available information does not name its individual musicians or establish a fixed personnel, hometown, or regular collaborators. What is clear is its connection to The World Stage’s ongoing jazz program, a Leimert Park institution founded by drummer Billy Higgins and poet Kamau Daáood and devoted to jazz and African American cultural expression. No reviews of the band’s performances are available in the supplied material, so this is best understood as an opportunity to hear an ensemble workshop engage directly with a century of jazz development.
The World Stage offers a unique experience as a dedicated space for jazz and African American cultural expression in Leimert Park. Founded by jazz drummer Billy Higgins and poet Kamau Daáood, it serves as both a performance venue and an educational hub, where you can catch live jazz concerts featuring both established and emerging artists. The room is a modest gallery-style space that encourages attentive listening, with a focus on the music rather than distractions like alcohol, which is not served here. Shows often include workshops and open jam sessions, fostering a community spirit rooted in artistic growth and cultural heritage. Expect a night where the music takes center focus, surrounded by walls that echo decades of creative history and community dedication.
