Who’s Live Today?

Dariel Peniazek Trio Ft. V. Shayne Frederick

Montauk (The Den)

Dariel Peniazek brings his trio to The Den at Montauk, with V. Shayne Frederick featured on the bill. The evening is presented as a trio performance rather than a larger Peniazek ensemble, with Frederick joining a program that connects Peniazek’s instrumental Latin-jazz work with Frederick’s vocal and piano-led jazz background. The backroom setting at Montauk is dedicated to listening, so this is a chance to hear the collaboration in a room built around live jazz and blues.

Peniazek is a composer and tres player whose work aims, in his words, to bring “a fresh approach to latin jazz.” He performs in formats from trio and quartet settings to larger orchestrated ensembles. Frederick is a vocalist and pianist praised by DownBeat as “soulful”; Metro Philadelphia called him “one of the region’s greatest jazz singers.” Philly Jazz Scene describes his music as blending “luxurious Jazz sensibilities with modern élan.” The two have recorded together on Frederick’s The King Suite and Treasures, with Peniazek contributing guitar and arranging. Frederick also performs with Yolanda Wisher & the Afroeaters and Ruth Naomi Floyd’s Frederick Douglass Jazz Works ensemble.

Behind the dining room of an East Coast-styled coastal restaurant in South Redondo Beach's Riviera Village, The Den operates as a dedicated backroom listening lounge focused on live jazz and blues. Curated by jazz trumpeter and composer Al Strong, the space pairs seated table service with performances from visiting touring artists and local players. Guests reserve tables or buy tickets in advance for evening sets running Thursday through Saturday, accompanied by craft cocktails and a dinner menu highlighting seafood, steaks, and small plates. The dark wood finishes, navy accents, and dim lighting give the room a classic supper-club feel where patrons come primarily to listen over drinks rather than talk through a set.
