Outlaws of Folk
Bogart's Coffee HouseOcean Avenue, Los Angeles 90740
Outlaws of Folk returns to Bogart’s Coffee House for its first-Thursday folk and roots series, created and hosted by songwriter Michael Ubaldini. Rather than a fixed band, the night gathers hand-picked recording artists, touring musicians and local singer-songwriters for individual 30-minute acoustic sets. The listing does not name the November 5 performers. A closing group “Sing Out” jam sometimes brings the participants together, and the series welcomes all ages.
Ubaldini, described by the series as a “rock n roll poet,” began Outlaws of Folk as a Rebel Brand acoustic folk night and a forum for fellow songwriters. Its guests come from Los Angeles, Orange County and Long Beach, with the format also travelling on occasion. The series draws on the spirit of the early-1960s Greenwich Village folk boom while making room for current songwriters and traditional folk material. A local newspaper describes invited artists presenting original songs alongside their takes on classic rock, blues and folk. CBS Los Angeles named Outlaws of Folk “Best Folk Music show in The OC” in 2017, recognition for the series rather than a confirmed performer on this date.
Bogart's Coffee House is a basement club at 905 Ocean Avenue in Seal Beach where live music happens in the evenings. The room holds a small crowd, with audience members sitting on wooden stools close to the stage. Shows start around 6 PM and run through 8 PM, featuring acoustic sets from Americana, blues, folk, and jazz artists. There's a bar with drinks available, and the atmosphere is relaxed; people listen to the music and talk between songs. The venue has a long-standing tradition of intimate performances, drawing locals who appreciate authentic, soulful music in a familiar, unpretentious setting.
