Black Flute Brigade celebrates its debut LP on Leaving Records, much of it recorded live at 2220 Arts earlier this year. Aaron Shaw, B~Free and NOAMZ each play a solo set before joining for a full-group performance.
The Los Angeles-based flute collective plays classics, contemporary R&B, hip-hop, soul, jazz and original arrangements, centering Black artistry, community and creative expression. A recent review heard the players’ flute lines “intertwined,” while another described “new harmonies emerging every two seconds.”
The 2220 Arts + Archives lounge and theater is a volunteer-run cultural center in a converted theater space, hosting experimental music, film, and literature. The room is a modest, intimate space with a stage and seating for a small audience, where the front row is close enough to feel the energy of the performers. The bar is open for 21+ events, offering drinks to accompany the music and conversation. Shows typically begin with doors opening 30-45 minutes early, and the venue operates as a programming cooperative, curating events that reflect its mission of non-commercial, adventurous arts.
