The Lighthouse Cafe11th Street, Los Angeles 90254
Max 80s marks its 10th anniversary with a Saturday daytime show at the Lighthouse Cafe. The LA five-piece plays an all-live tribute to the 1980s, drawing on new wave and classic alternative favorites from artists including Cheap Trick, the Cars, INXS and Duran Duran. This edition also includes a special video set from VJ Myles, pairing the music with iconic videos from the decade.
Formed in 2017 as M80s and renamed Max 80s in 2019, the band calls itself “South Bay’s 80s era new wave and classic alternative cover band.” Its lineup is Brian White on drums, Dave Carr on vocals, Dave Donson on guitar, Jeff White on bass and Mike Rubin on keyboards. Members have played in South Bay groups One Digit Down and Crow Hill Band, as well as Northern California’s Carr Tones, with backgrounds spanning Hollywood’s 1980s glam-rock circuit, San Diego’s 1990s alternative scene and the East Coast college circuit. Saint Rocke says the group “always bring the house down,” praising its “unique energy” and interpretations of ’80s classics.
The Lighthouse Cafe is a storied live music venue with a full bar and restaurant, known for its deep roots in West Coast jazz history. The room feels like a classic beachside bar with a central stage and patio seating that fills quickly, so arriving early or reserving a table is wise. The menu offers comfort food favorites alongside cocktails, complementing the diverse lineup that ranges from jazz and funk to tribute bands and reggae. Shows often have modest cover charges or are free, creating a welcoming space where the music takes priority but socializing and enjoying drinks are part of the evening. The venue’s walls echo decades of legendary performances, making it a vibrant spot to soak in both music and the laid-back Hermosa Beach vibe.
