David Garfield marks his 70th birthday at Catalina Jazz Club by leading an all-star ensemble with vocalist Lilliana de los Reyes, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, trumpeter Rick Braun and additional special guests. The program draws on Garfield’s recordings, mixing his original compositions with newly imagined covers associated with Freddie Hubbard, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Miles Davis. Expect a set built around classic jazz, funk and Latin material, with featured voices and horns giving the birthday celebration the shape of a collaborative bandstand rather than a solo showcase.

Chicago-born and raised in St. Louis, Garfield moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s and became a keyboardist, songwriter, producer and bandleader working across jazz, fusion, funk and Latin music. He has led Karizma and Los Lobotomys, and his collaborations include George Benson, whom he has served as musical director, plus Smokey Robinson, Cher, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather, the Temptations, Boz Scaggs, Freddie Hubbard and Tom Scott. Reviewers have praised his ability to make jazz “accessible and fun” while avoiding “overly smooth or atonal styles”; his Jazz: Outside the Box was called a “fascinating and exhilarating exploration of jazz,” noted for elegant piano-centered arrangements and top-flight collaborators.
