Emancipator brings Doug Appling’s downtempo electronic project to El Rey Theatre, joined on this tour by longtime collaborator Ilya Goldberg, performing as Lapa. Shrimpnose is also on the bill. Expect Appling’s blend of beats, live instrumentation and melodic writing, shaped for an immersive live set.
Virginia-raised and based in Portland, Oregon, Appling founded Loci Records and is known for music that moves among electronic, acoustic and cinematic elements. Rolling Stone described his debut as one that “beautifully mixes hip hop beats with guitar feedback and a delicate piano melody,” while the Emancipator and Lapa collaboration 11th Orbit was praised for its “organic approach to electronic music.”
El Rey’s distinction is written into its room: a 1936 Art Deco movie palace, still dressed with chandeliers and velvet, now used for live concerts. The theatre became a music venue in 1994, so a night here pairs a preserved historic interior with a working concert hall. Expect general-admission standing on the main floor unless your show’s ticket details say otherwise; some performances offer VIP table seating in the balcony. Doors typically open an hour before showtime, and support acts may be added closer to the date, so check the event listing before heading over. The venue has cashless concessions, and its FAQ points guests to a neighboring restaurant for a bite. It remains an active venue on Wilshire Boulevard in Miracle Mile.
