BYZANTINE STOMPERS

Erik Della Penna’s Byzantine Stompers is an acoustic trio that turns Byzantine manuscripts and American roots music into compact compositions and improvisational starting points. Della Penna handles guitar and vocals, with Daisy Castro on violin and Wade Schuman on harmonicas.

The group approaches Mediterranean antiquity through the tools of roots music, in what its listing calls an “archaeological dig into ancient music,” rendered “carelessly” and informed by both traditions. Their premise is the future of ancient music: prophetic and inaccurate, by their own description.
